Volunteer Opportunity with Walk San Diego - September 2012

WalkSanDiego desires to release a regional walkability scorecard in late October of this year. The scorecard will rate each of the 18 cities in the region on walkability based on several data points: (1) policies that promote walking (which can include things such as density bonuses, parking policies, street design policies), (2) traffic engineering reports on walkability infrastructure available in each city, (3) pedestrian collision data, and (4) the most fun element – ‘groundtruthing’ of streets that will come from hundreds volunteers around the region, our so-called Foot Soldiers!

For the last part, Walk San Diego is developing an app that volunteers will use to enter walkability data in target areas of each city. The app and this piece of data will focus on street design features, crossing safety, comfort and appeal of walking, and transit area design.

All data pieces will contribute to an overall score, a kind of index, for each city that we will release in late October. The methodology is based on a national model, Walk Friendly Community Assessment Tool.

Leaders 2020 members are invited to volunteer for a Walk San Diego day TBD in September. Email emma@equinoxcenter.org if you are interested or for more details.
