WHAT IS THE MEASURE?
Percent of new technology businesses in San Diego County focused on environmental technology and services.*
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
- There is increasing evidence that conservation and resolving environmental issues can stimulate significant economic opportunity.
- San Diego is a leader in the innovation economy, and building on our clean technology history could increase jobs and our local GDP, as well as help to improve our local, national and global environment.
- A University of California, Berkeley study recently found that shifting from fossil fuels to an economy based on alternative fuels and energy efficiency can have 10 times the economic benefit to our State, in addition to the environmental benefits it provides.
HOW ARE WE DOING? 
The number of start-ups focused on environmental technology and services has slightly increased over the past few years, but it still remains a small percentage (8% for the first 3 quarters of 2009) of total technology start ups in the County.
*This data has limitations because it doesn’t show the number of employees, revenue generated or the number of start-ups that remain in business. In addition, there is still not yet an agreed upon definition of “green business”. Equinox Center will work with other local organizations to improve data available on this topic.
