Factoid Friday: Bicycling made easier in San Diego and the nation

Ever hop on your bicycle for a quick local errand only to find yourself frustratingly searching for a spot to lock your wheels? Bicyclists around the nation can rest assure – help is not only on the way, it has already arrived in several cities.

Cities around the nation are responding to the urgent need for bike parking by installing bike corrals in urban areas.  These contraptions are simply elongated bike racks that can accommodate up to twelve bikes in the same space normally designated for a single car.

San Diego is among the pioneering cities implementing this solution for the cycling community.  The first bike corral has already been constructed in Hillcrest this summer, with several more slated to go up soon.

These bike corrals not only encourage environmentally friendly transportation, but they also function to support local business – as 12 patrons can now park and shop in areas that had previously only housed one vehicle.

Just a few more reasons to fit a refreshing bike ride into your schedule soon!
