Factoid Friday: San Diego County leads the nation in farmland abundance

Did you know San Diego County has over 6,500 farms? That’s more than any other county in the United States!  With this week being National Farmer’s Market Week, what better time to celebrate the bountiful supply of fresh, locally grown produce San Diegans are privy to.

Look no further for a great reason to indulge in delicious fruits and vegetables this week – and always! Supporting our regional food system is beneficial to your health, our environment and our regional economy.  Local produce is picked 1-2 days before being sold to consumers so it is usually more flavorful and of higher nutrient content than produce shipped from distant states and countries. And the environment benefits as well because food that is produced and consumed locally travels a shorter distance, requiring less fuel and packaging during transit.  In addition, the money spent at local farms and farmers markets stays within the community and stimulates the local economy.

With over 45 Certified Farmer’s Markets throughout San Diego County, there’s bound to be one near you. So take a detour from your schedule today, this week or anytime to enjoy fresh produce and help our community thrive in the process.
