The Cost of Living Domino Effect: 10News Previews Our 2012 Quality of Life Dashboard
Be sure to watch Channel 10News tonight for a preview of another key finding from Equinox Center’s 2012 Quality of Life Dashboard to be released tomorrow.
Among key findings in the 2012 Dashboard? More than half of all San Diego households are feeling the pinch of high housing costs right now.
The percent of households who spend more than a third of
their income on housing is a key indicator of our region’s housing
affordability and also our overall quality of life. And that number has risen
yet again in San Diego County.
High housing costs impact all of our lives in ways we may not even realize. It’s bad for the economy because residents have less discretionary income to purchase goods and services from local businesses.
When
housing in core areas is not affordable, people move to less expensive areas,
usually farther from jobs and services. This increases traffic congestion and
transportation costs and threatens air quality and public health.
Housing costs even
influence our region’s competitiveness, deterring businesses and talented
workers form the region.
Tomorrow we’ll unveil more details on why it is vital for the San Diego region to address its housing woes, and how our region’s high cost of living impacts all of our quality of life in ways we might not even have imagined. Most of all, we’ll focus on solutions that have worked right here in our own region.
